Amantaní Island

The approx. 15 km² tall Amantaní Island is just 38 km westwards from Puno in the Lake Titicaca. Two peaks named Pachatata and Pachamama lend this island its typical silhouette. On Amantaní you can visit the archeological ruins of the Inca and Tiwanaku culture which are mostly on the island peaks. The mother tongue of the inhabitants is Quechua while Spanish is only a foreign language. Nevertheless especially the younger people are able to speak Spanish. The economy of Amantaní is composed of fishing and agriculture. That`s why the idyllic landscape is covered with colorful terraces where mais, corn, quinua and different types of potatoes are planted. Furthermore the people of Amantaní have a school and a small hospital. The visitors of Amantaní get the chance to stay overnight in a traditional host family where they get to learn more about the lifestyle, food and tradition of the Amantanian people.
