Taquile Island

The 6 km long and 1 km wide Taquile Island is also known as "Island of the knitting men". This given name is validly. Surprisingly those are the male inhabitants who are spinning wool and are knighting the typical beanies called Chullos. On the contrary the women are weaving creative hip straps. Another tradition of this island is the Chullos-wearing tradition who gives information about the status of the male persons. While the red-Chullos-wearing men are married the ones with the red-white-striped Chullos are singles. Furthermore those are the female inhabitants who decide the partner choice.

The inhabitants of Taquile Island are providing their food with fishing and agriculture. In the last years the tourism has developed to the most important revenue stream of Taquile. The tourists have the opportunity to stay overnight in a traditional host family where they can get to learn more about the lifestyle, food and tradition of the Taquilean people.
